Twelve shell-shaped UFOs suddenly appeared above the earth, hovering over twelve different countries. Aliens sent signals to humans, but humans could not interpret them. The U.S. military found linguist Louis (Amy Adams) and physicist Ian (Jeremy Renner), hoping that the two could work together to solve the mysteries of the alien language .
After several contacts, Louis discovered that the aliens used a very special ring-shaped text, and gradually understood the mystery. Since it has been impossible to determine the real purpose of aliens coming to the earth, four countries including China and Russia decided to launch attacks on aliens, and the United States also decided to abandon research and evacuate all personnel. At this juncture, Louis finally understood the aliens’ intentions. Using the special “weapon” given to her by the aliens, Louis changed the future by himself.
“Arrival” is a 2016 science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. The film is based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang.
The story follows linguistics professor Louise Banks (Adams) who is recruited by the US military to help communicate with an alien species that has arrived on Earth in twelve massive, monolithic ships. Along with physicist Ian Donnelly (Renner), Banks must race against time to decipher the alien language and figure out their intentions before a global war breaks out.
As Banks delves deeper into the alien language, she experiences vivid flashbacks and dreams that seem to reveal more about the aliens and her own personal life than she initially thought possible. The film explores themes of communication, language, and the nature of time.
“Arrival” was critically acclaimed upon its release, with particular praise given to Adams’ performance and the film’s intelligent and thought-provoking script. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won for Best Sound Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was also a box office success, grossing over $200 million worldwide.
